FYI...Foreign Transaction Fee...

Postby Linda0711 » Tue Dec 22, 2009 9:58 am

Two weeks ago I booked a return flight from Cabo back to the US on Delta for my husband, I did this on line thru the Delta website from home. After checking my credit card I was charged by Citibank a foreign transaction fee of $16.40. After 3 calls and 1 hour of back and forth calls between Citibank and Delta it was explained that this ticket was booked thru Citibanks Mexico City Office which created this charge even though it originated from the US in US dollars. I did get this refunded by finally getting a Supervior, nowhere when booking did they disclose this fee. Had I made this arrangement from Mexico I could understand this. I am aware of FTF's but not while I am on US soil with a major US bank. For his return trip next year I will use my Capital One card that does not charge foreign transaction fees.. BUYER BEWARE...

Happy Holidays Everyone...Flying out Sunday for my home away from home!! YEA!!

Thanks, Linda. I hardly coined the term, though. Saw it in my local newspaper and thought it was a pretty descriptive term.

Thanks for the heads up on the credit card change. We get dinged for the foreign transaction fees on our Bank of American card, too. We have been wanting to get a Capital One credit card for the sole purpose of traveling, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I use my CO card for business, so am not supposed to also use it for personal stuff. Oh well, I'll get around to it eventually.

But, wow, boy was your CC company really gouging you! What a crock of you-know-what! You didn't buy the flippin' ticket in Mexico, nor did you purchase it in pesos, so someone there really had some brass huevos to charge you that fee! Glad you got it refunded. What a hassle, though.
