Looking for Map to Waterfall in Sierra La Luguna

Postby bob » Sun Jan 04, 2009 10:40 am

About five years ago we took a jeep trip with Baja Wild that ended at a ?national park? up in the Sierra La Lagunas up above Santiago. Had a great time at the falls and swimming hole and was thinking about going back on our own. Does anyone know or have a map that shows the area and how to get there? It was not a bad drive, but lots of dirt roads with many forks once we got off the main roads in Santiago. Also, Santiago was a pretty neat little town if you have not been there. thanks, bob

Found the way to the falls at the link below.

Don't use the ropes if you go. When we were there they were pretty dry rotted and probably more dangerous if you relied on them and you really did not need.

Thanks for posting this. It's one of our planned items for our trip this November. We've never been to the waterfalls before, and we're too cheap to pay the $200+ pp fee that the tour outfits want in order to take you out there. :)

Wish us luck finding it!

Cascada Sol de Mayo ("Cabo Waterfall")

I posted this on TripAdvisor, but thought I should post it here as well.
-------------------

Finally made it to the waterfall this year. Followed directions from this site:
http://brainwrite.com/2008/how-to-find- ... -del-mayo/

Even these directions weren't totally clear. You're tooling along what is obviously a private ranch, going over cattle guards and through holes in the barbed wire fencing. There are signs with confusing arrows (turn right!) and, finally, you'll make it. You'll know you're there when it dead ends and you see a thatched cuarto de baño (bathroom).

The day that we went, no one was there to collect the fee, either when we arrived, or by the time we left. There was also no "deposit" box where we could leave money, nor did we have any idea what we should have paid anyway. Made us feel a little guilty. Next time we go, we'll just pay double, I guess.

I'd tell you how gorgeous it was, but pictures are worth a thousand words:

BTW - If you're afraid of heights or would have difficultly scaling what is essentially a very steep rock cliff (with "steps" ha ha ha built into the cliff side), then you won't make it past the half-way mark on the trail. Two of our party could go no further -- the rest of us went all the way down. The water was cool and wonderful, but we didn't swim because we didn't want to end up looking like clay figurines by the time we reached our cars at the top of the hill (water + dusty path).

Bring lots of water and a camera, of course, and some good sneakers for walking & climbing.

We went to the waterfalls during our trip at new years. For the people that haven't been you should try and go its well worth
it. Very beautiful, easy to get there the directions were right on. It was 64 miles from our house which is really close to playa
grande. It took us a little less than two hours to get to the waterfalls (including the drive and walk to the falls) I highly recomend it. Were going back down next week and I think I will take our friends there one day.

We had 'regular' rental cars... nothing special. You don't need an 'off road' vehicle, if that's what you were asking.

Have fun and take lots of photos. It's beautiful!
